MMM Membership Grows Despite Reps Order To Security Agents

Some Abuja residents on Thursday said that they have benefited immensely from the popular financial programme, MMM Nigeria Scheme, and have no intention of leaving the scheme anytime soon.
The Mavrodi Mondial Movement popularly known as MMM has gained popularity among Nigerians as the programme promises a monthly payment of 30 per cent interest on loans provided by participants.
This is against the backdrop of the House of Representatives order in November that operators of the scheme should be arrested to protect Nigerians from financial devastation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in spite of the order, MMM’s membership had continued to grow.
Some residents who spoke to NAN said that MMM was very beneficial to Nigerians.
Ebube osakwe, a civil servant told NAN that she doesn’t see the programme as a Ponzi scheme and believed it could help many Nigerians.
“When I heard about it, I was skeptical at first, but I decided to test the system by putting in N20,000 to see if I would get the money they claimed.
“To my surprise, a month later, I got my N20,000 with my 30 per cent interest and an extra bonus.
“I was amazed by the success so I put more money into the system and have benefitted from it.
“This programme has helped many Nigerians deal with this recession so I don’t see the wrong in it.”
Godwin Dickson, a mechanic said that the scheme had helped him with his finances, adding that it had assisted him immensely in paying his debts.
“I don’t care what anyone has to say about MMM because as far as I am concerned, it has saved my life.
“I have paid off my debts and I have been able to generate extra change to take care of my household.
“I owed someone a large sum of money and someone introduced me to MMM and loaned me N500,000 to put into the scheme.
“The money I got back was able to clear all my debts at once and I was able to finally breathe again.
“I am aware of the risks of this programme, but it is also a lifesaver and I will advise more Nigerians to get involved at least for now that it seems safe,” he said.
Joyce Okoh, an entrepreneur, said that she was certain the business would crash at a point, but she would take advantage of it while it lasts.
“I know that this programme has failed before in some countries and I admit it is a sort of Ponzi scheme but why should I complain when I am benefitting from it?
“MMM is bound to fail whether the government bans it or not, because the process is supported by new members funding the profits to be made by older members which will crash at some point.
“However, I have made a large sum of money from this programme and I am willing to continue reaping the benefits it is offering for now.
“I just have to ensure I don’t get greedy and invest my whole savings or sell my property like many people have done because when it crashes, people will become suicidal.
“I think the key thing here is to know your limit and know when to bow out of the programme,” she said. (NAN)

Conte Wonders Why Moses Was Underestimated

Coach of Chelsea Antonio Conte says the qualities of Nigerian forward Victor Moses was glaring for him to see from the first day of their pre season training.
Moses moved from being sent out on loan in three consecutive seasons to becoming a regular under Conte, as a wing-back in the manager’s 3-4-3 system.
“I could see his potential from the first days of the summer training camp”, he told Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Moses has important qualities, technique, physical strength and the ability to cover 70 metres of the pitch.
“I find it incredible that someone like him has been underestimated”, Conte added.
Moses has become a key man at Chelsea under Conte this season, helping the Blues to hit top spot in the Premier League at the weekend.

Buhari Makes History, Signs Eight Bills Into Law In One Day

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday engraved his name on the stones of history by assenting to eight different bills passed by the National Assembly into law.
His special adviser on National Assembly matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang made the disclosure while briefing State House Correspondents on the developments at the presidential villa, Abuja.
The new Acts were:
*The Prevention of Crime Amendment Act 2016
*The National Crop Varieties and Livestock Breeds (Registration) Amendment Act 2016
*Telecommunications and Postal Offences Amendment Act 2016
*The National Agricultural Land Development Authority Amendment Act 2016
*The Produce Enforcement of Export Standards Amendment Act 2016
*The Agricultural and Rural Management Training Institute Amendment Act 2016
*Bee Import Control and Management Amendment Act 2016
*Water Resources Amendment Act 2016 .
Enang said that the Bills which had become an Act of Parliament and by extension, laws reflected the agenda of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
According to the presidential Adviser, they were all initiated by the National Assembly as none was an Executive Bill.
He said: “Mr. President assented to eight bills passed by the National Assembly. The different bills are on different sectors of the economy and development. The bills have, as from today, become an Act.
“These bills were passed by the National Assembly and transmitted to Mr. President for assent and Mr. President today assented to them today and they have automatically become law.
“Mr. President expresses his appreciation to leadership and membership of National Assembly for the great work they did in considering the bills and the details that have gone in to consider the bills .
“Mr. President considers the Act as very vital to the present administration and in consonance with All Progressive Congress, APC, agenda and thanks the National Assembly very much.
“He also directs that ministries, departments and agencies and all government functionaries, that whenever there is a bill pending before the National Assembly and there is a call for public hearing, they must attend and make inputs into those bills so that those inputs will be taken into accounts by the legislature when considering the bill. So that when the bills are eventually passed it would be easier to implement.”

Executed: Nigerian Player, Obioha Hanged In Singapore For Drug Trafficking

Singapore on Friday executed Nigerian Chijioke Stephen Obioha who was convicted of drug trafficking, the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) released in a statement.
The Nigerian alongside another Malaysian were hanged after their last-minute appeals were rejected by the country’s authorities. “A 38-year-old male Nigerian national, Chijioke Stephen Obioha, had his death sentence carried out on 18 November 2016 at Changi Prison Complex,” the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said in a statement.
Obioha, who came to Singapore hoping to be a footballer, according to news agency AFP, was convicted of trafficking 2.6 kilograms of cannabis in 2008.
Under the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA), the death penalty is imposed if the amount of cannabis trafficked is 500g or more. Obioha was given the opportunity to be considered for re-sentencing under the new death penalty regime in 2013, which would open up the option of a life-sentence, but opted not to do so.
In May 2015, Obioha changed his mind and elected to be considered for re-sentencing under the new death penalty regime. Although his request to adduce fresh evidence was rejected, the Court of Appeal ordered a stay of execution for Chijioke Stephen Obioha to allow him time to file an application for re-sentencing.
But in Aug 2016, he withdrew his re-sentencing application. According to CNB, he was notified that the stay of execution would be lifted on Oct 24, 2016 unless he demonstrated by noon on October 21 to the Court of Appeal’s satisfaction that there was good reason not to do so. Obioha did not put in an application and the stay of execution was lifted on Oct 24. On Wednesday, his lawyers launched a final bid to have his sentence commuted to life in prison but were turned down the next day.
In a separate case, the CNB also confirmed the execution of 31-year-old Malaysian Devendran Supramaniam, who was convicted of trafficking heroin. He was convicted of importing 83.36g of diamorphine into Singapore and sentenced to death on July 29, 2014. The offence of trafficking diamorphine (or pure heroin) is punishable by death if the amount imported is 15g or more.
His appeal against conviction and sentence was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in May 2015. Devendran’s counsel filed for a stay of execution at the eleventh hour on Nov 17, 2016 and to re-open his appeal.
The criminal motions were heard and dismissed by the Court of Appeal on the same day. His sentence was carried out on Nov 18. He had also been given the opportunity to petition the President for clemency but was turned down.

Why Christians Voted For Donald Trump Over Hillary Clinton

The race for the United States of America presidential office began in June, 2015.
Since then, a lot of crazy things have happened, exposing the true colours of presidential candidates,
Trump has been exposed as a huge racist, who thinks very little of women, and Mexicans, while the first female candidate has faced a lot of fire in her private emails scandals.
Still, most people, especially on social media, seemed to choose Clinton over the real estate mogul, with the hashtag, #imwithher.#
However, today's votes show that people clearly chose
Trump over the hugely celebrated female candidate, as the businessman becomes the 45th presidential-elect.
Now, a lot of people are wondering who and why anyone would pick him over her.
Well, the answer is that whites and American Christians chose him. Why? Because most people think she is the devil-reincarnate based on her opinion on abortion, and other controversial subjects.
Christian Today reports that evangelical Christians backed Trump by 81 per cent to 16 per cent, making this biggest evangelical vote ever achieved.

Let me explain how and why this happened.
So, Trump was very smart during his campaign because he pandered to everyone.
For Christians, he promised to fight gay marriages, and other hot button subjects, while Democrat presidential nominee, Clinton, openly showed her support for abortion, a big no-no for believers.
Her stance on certain controversial subjects for Christians turned almost all American believers against her.
A Catholic church bulletin by Father Richard Perozich is the perfect example of how much Christians dislike her.
The weekly bulletin for the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on October 30, 2016, stated, "It is a mortal sin to vote Democrat... immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell."
Another church in North Carolina has been vocal about their dislike for Clinton.
According to Inquisitr, the church has put up an anti-Hillary Clinton sign.
Using his twitter handle, Tim Jones , the pastor of
Resurrection Baptist Church, wrote, " As long as I pastor this church and as long as I have a breath, I’m going to let people know where I stand. And I stand for God and I stand for what’s right and I stand for this country.
The only stipulation is you vote against abortion, corruption, excessive gun control, Obamacare and career political criminals! Otherwise, you will have to take a cab! Our church is NOT ashamed to stand up and support Donald Trump! ”
Another Christian that dislikes the female presidential candidate is actress and The View co-host, Candace Cameron Bure.
During a recent episode of the show, she clearly stated that she would NOT be voting for Clinton.
These are just a few examples of how much American Christians dislike the female candidate and why they clearly did not vote for her.
There is no doubt that there are some Christians who prefer her over him, such as Meagan Good and her husband, Devon Franklin, and so on.
Unfortunately, the like for Clinton by these very few Christians clearly could not stand a chance against the huge hate by Evangelical Christians.
American Christians did not vote for Donald Trump because they like or support him, they simply prefer him to Hillary Clinton and her 'anti-Christian' beliefs.

Union Vows To Resist Attempts By FG To Sell Its Stakes In NNPC

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), has vowed to resist any attempt by the Federal Government to sell its stakes in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
According to Punch, the spokesman of PENGASSAN, Emmanuel Ojugbana said the union’s stand on the issue still remains the same.
This is coming on the heels of a proposal by the petroleum ministry on November 10, 2016, suggesting the sale of the government’s stakes in NNPC.
Ojugbana said “Actually, the government is trying to revisit the Petroleum Industry Bill and that may have to do with the draft document being reported. But we have not engaged with them in order to know the implication of what is in the draft or the bill. However, we have already made our position clear and I’m restating it that we are not in support of any attempt to sell our national assets.
“But if there are other policies of government that will enhance the oil and gas industry, we are in support of that. So, we need to understand what the draft proposal is all about and then we will make our contributions. But as per the sale of assets, PENGASSAN is completely against it and should be counted out.
“We are not in support of the sale of our national assets; we will only give support to policies that aim to create adequate governance structures, as this will provide more business opportunities, which is good for the Nigerian people. In times like this, the government should not consider the sale of assets belonging to the NNPC, for we will oppose it seriously.”
He also added that PENGASSAN will support the Federal Government if it comes up with options that will benefit Nigerians.
Lending his voice, PENGASSAN Secretary-General,
Lumumba Okugbawa said the union is looking forward to holding talks with the Federal Government.
Okugbawa also said the government should not be allowed to sell national assets that belong to Nigerians.

He said “Our position still remains the same that they cannot sell our national assets. It is not to be allowed. We don’t have the details of which company they want to sell in the NNPC. Is it the Kaduna, Warri or Port Harcourt refinery? Is it a different subsidiary of the NNPC, or is it the entire NNPC? These are things we need to find out.
“But no matter what it may be, our position stays and it is that the government should not be allowed to sell our collective national assets. There should be better ways to handle things, not by selling our national assets. So, we look forward to having better dialogue with the government.”
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo recently called for an urgent reform of the NNPC business operations model.

US Election Prediction: We Aren’t On The Same Level Spiritually, TB Joshua Chides Critics

Following the uproar which greeted his unfulfilled prophesy that Former Democrat candidate, Hillary Clinton will beat Republican candidate, Donald Trump, in the just concluded US Presidential election, General Overseer, The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet TB Joshua, Sunday, chided his critics, saying “Our levels are different. We are not on the same level.”
Prophet Joshua, who made this remark during a service at the headquarters of his church in Ikotun, Lagos on Sunday, said: “We have seen the outcome of the election in America. Having read, you will notice that it is all about the popular vote, the vote of the majority of Americans.
“In this case, we need the Spirit of a Prophet to recognize or to know a Prophet. Our levels are different. We are not on the same level.
“We might have great cathedrals, huge bells, and all kinds of activities that are good by human standards but human point of view is limited.
“1 Corinthians 1:25. The foolishness of God is wiser than that of men and the weakness of God is stronger than that of men. There is no shortcut to spiritual maturity unless earthly understanding gives way to spiritual enlightenment.
“I see many people trying to interpret prophets on the basis of their own minds and ideas. The prophecy seems to cause uproar, to many who gave it different meaning and interpretation.
“Finally, campaigns and elections in any democratic country in the world are never about one person, it is about the country we care and love. Whichever way it happens, we must accept the outcome and then look to the future (God), the Author and Finisher.
“Democracy is all about accommodation. All democrats must value the process of democracy more than the product.
“God bless the United States of America.”

How Nigeria VS Algeria Sparked MMM Trend

Super Eagles 3-1 win over Algeria in the World Cup qualifying match has sparked an “MMM” trend on twitter with over 6,000 tweets as at the time of this report.
MMM was derived from the names of the Nigerian goal scorers in the qualifier, Moses Mikel Moses (MMM)
However, the trend has gone beyond the football match to celebrate an online platform: Mavrodi Mundial Movement (MMM) which is gaining wide popularity among Nigerians.
The platform is said to yield 30% of donations made after 30 days and many Nigerians have embraced it in the wake of the economic recession and in the quest for financial freedom.
However, the platform has been classified by the CBN and SEC as a ponzi scheme that Nigerians should be wary of while the House of Representatives had ordered its investigation.
The trends following the football match however suggest that the call by the financial regulators as well as the lawmakers may have fallen on deaf ears.

Why Trump Won. The Neglected Story

The first black President passes the torch to first ever female President. That was the script, at least in the minds of many. But it played out different.
People around the world are still in shock over the win of Donald Trump, a serial woman abuser and “racist”, over Hillary Clinton in the just concluded US Presidential election.
How could this have happened? All the polls pointed to Hillary being victorious and pundits are still wondering how Trump snatched it?
One thing is clear, though, this race was bigger than Trump himself.

Poll numbers show that Trump won 29% i.e. a third of Latino votes even after he repeatedly threatened to deport them and build a wall on the Mexican border.
You would also have expected American women, of all races, to unite behind Hillary against a man who has referred to them as dogs, pigs and even advised men to “ grab them by the pussy ”.
Yet only 34% of white women voted for Hillary while 62% voted for Trump. So clearly there’s something bigger than hate, misogyny, and racism at play here.
Though lots of Trump supporters would love to hang a 'niggar', he won this election on the backs of neutrals who voted Republican. Why would they vote a man like Trump?
America might be the land of the free but it was founded on Christian values. In 2014, 280 million Americans or 70% Americans were Christians . These consists of African Americans , Latinos, and Whites.
These people have watched their values and beliefs being eroded by a system more concerned about being politically correct. A system that passed the abortion law, same-sex marriage, transgender toilet rights etc.
This reflected in votes. According to the Pew Research Center, 8 in 10 white born-agains, evangelical Christians voted for Trump and 1.5 for Clinton.
They voted as Christians, not Republicans or Democrats. They voted to fight an establishment who forces their daughters to share toilets with 'women who were born men'.
It must be noted that most of them do not consider Trump an ideal Christian, but the Republican Party's conservative stance would protect their values.
Then there’s the haves and the have-nots. " When you struggle you get angry... and Trump became the symbol of that anger, " Sam Abrams.
Too often prosperity is judged by the what’s going on in the big cities and little thought is spared for the rural communities. As the divide got bigger so did their resentment. Add to that the high cost of Obamacare.
This resentment naturally reflected in the votes as people in prosperous cities voted Hillary while the rural zones voted Trump.
According to the USA today 50% of America’s middle class who earn $100,000 and above voted for Trump.
Why? Frankly, because they were tired. " Mrs Clinton comes from the establishment. It's the same old fashioned government. We don't need that anymore ,"
Rolando Chumaceiro , a family doctor.
He admitted that Trump was vulgar towards women but still prefers him to Clinton.
The way I see it, Trump did not win, the Democrats lost. The people wanted a change and Hillary, a Democrat, simply does not reflect that change.

The Mysterious System Called Electoral College

NOVEMBER 7, 2012: Dateline: United States of America, precisely, New York City. That was where Donald Trump was, as of the time the results of the presidential election held earlier on that day, started trickling in.
The early results indicated that Mitt Romney, who was the Republican standard bearer, may get the popular vote but lose the Electoral College to Barack Obama.

Though, that projection did not turn out exactly, as the then second-term-seeking President secured 332 Electoral College votes against Romney’s 206, just as he also scored 65,915,795 popular votes to his opponent’s 60,933,504 votes.

Faced with Romney’s imminent defeat at the electoral college in line with the projection, a disturbed Trump, twitted thus on his Twitter handle: @realDonaldTrump ’’The electoral college … a disaster for a democracy.” ‘’This election is a total sham and a travesty. We are not a democracy!’’
Instructively, Obama won both the Electoral College and the Popular Vote but Trump’s anger over the Electoral College was not in isolation neither was it the first of its kind over the Electoral College.
The Electoral College, which is a unique system of electing American presidents, has in its two-century history, been trailed by anger, excitement, criticisms and misconception.
Though its origin, practicability and import are more understood by Americans, the role it plays in the emergence of an American President, especially in modern times, is largely becoming a point of discomfort for those it was made for.
To put it simply, the workings of the Electoral College is daily becoming an antithesis of one of the core principles of American democracy, which recognises the inalienable right of the majority to choose who leads them.
Consider this: Clinton had 59,755,284 in the popular votes, defeating Trump, who scored 59,535,522 in that regard. But the Electoral College gifted Trump 290 votes as against Clinton’s 232.
Her victory at the popular votes level implied that she had 47.6 percent of the total votes cast while Trump got 47.3 percent.
Emphatically, Clinton did not just win the popular vote, she got it with a wide margin.
But that was short of what was needed to make her President of the free world.
While Americans are not lost as to why someone, who got the highest number of votes did not make it to the White House, many across the world can’t stop asking: What manner of process is Electoral College? At the same time, reports suggest that Americans are getting more irritated by that political culture.
However, to properly understand this voting method and what it stands for, an appreciation of its historical foundation becomes unavoidable and imperative.

What is the Electoral College?
The Electoral College is made up of 538 electors who cast votes to decide the President and Vice-President of the United States. When voters go to the polls on the first or second Tuesday of November in the fourth year of the incumbent, they choose which candidate receives their state’s electors. The candidate who receives 270 of the votes wins the Presidency. The number 538 is the sum of the nation’s 435 Representatives, 100 Senators, and 3 electors given to the District of Columbia.

Legal origin
The Constitutional Convention of 1787 considered several methods of electing the President, including selection by Congress, by the governors of the states, by the state legislatures, by a special group of Members of Congress chosen by lot, and by direct popular election. Late in the convention, the matter was referred to the Committee of Eleven on Postponed Matters, which devised the Electoral College system in its original form.
This plan, which met with widespread approval by the delegates, was incorporated into the final document with only minor changes. It sought to reconcile differing state and federal interests, provide a degree of popular participation in the election, give the less populous states some additional leverage in the process by providing “senatorial” electors, preserve the presidency as independent of Congress, and generally insulate the election process from political manipulation.
In a piece on the subject by a former Deputy Director, FEC Office of Election Administration in the US, William C. Kimberling, he observed thus: ”The structure of the Electoral College can be traced to the Centurial Assembly system of the Roman Republic. Under that system, the adult male citizens of Rome were divided, according to their wealth, into groups of 100 (called Centuries). Each group of 100 was entitled to cast only one vote either in favor or against proposals submitted to them by the Roman Senate.
In the Electoral College system, the States serve as the Centurial groups (though they are not, of course, based on wealth), and the number of votes per state is determined by the size of each State’s Congressional Delegation. Still, the two systems are similar in design and share many of the same advantages and disadvantages.
”The similarities between the Electoral College and classical institutions are not accidental. Many of the Founding Fathers were well schooled in ancient history and its lessons. In the evolution of the Electoral College, there have been some interesting developments and remarkable outcomes. Critics often try to use these as examples of what can go wrong. Yet, most of these historical curiosities were the result of profound political divisions within the country which the designers of the Electoral College system seem to have anticipated as needing resolution at a higher level.”

How members are nominated
Nomination of elector-candidates is another of the many aspects of this system left to state and political party preferences. Most states prescribe one of two methods: 34 states require that candidates for the office of presidential elector be nominated by state party conventions, while a further ten mandate nomination by the state party’s central committee. The remaining states use a variety of methods, including nomination by the governor (on recommendation of party committees), by primary election, and by the party’s presidential nominee.

How Electoral College works?
Every four years, voters go to the polls and select a candidate for President and Vice-President. In all but two states, the candidate who wins the majority of votes in a state wins that state’s electoral votes.
In Nebraska and Maine, electoral votes are assigned by proportional representation, meaning that the top vote-getter in those states wins two electoral votes while the remaining electoral votes are allocated congressional district by congressional district. These rules make it possible for both candidates to receive electoral votes from Nebraska and Maine, unlike the winner-takes-all system in the other 48 states.
Neither the Constitution of the United States nor Federal election laws compel electors to vote for their party’s candidate. That said, twenty-seven states have laws on the books that require electors to vote for their party’s candidate if that candidate gets a majority of the state’s popular vote. In 24 states, no such laws apply, but common practice is for electors to vote for their party’s nominee.

If no one gets a majority of Electoral College votes
If no one gets a majority of electoral votes, the election is thrown to the U.S. House of Representatives. The top three contenders face off with each state casting one vote. Whoever wins a majority of states wins the election. The process is the same for the Vice Presidency, except that the U.S. Senate makes that selection.

When Electoral College cast its votes
Each state’s electors meet on the Monday following the second Wednesday of December. They cast their votes then, and those votes are sent to the President of the Senate who reads them before both houses of Congress on January 6th.
The Electoral College determines the President and Vice-President of the United States. The Electoral College system also distinguishes the United States from other systems where the highest vote-getter automatically wins. This so-called indirect election process has been the subject of criticism and attempted reform, though proponents of it maintain that it ensures the rights of smaller states and stands as an important piece of American federalist democracy.

Tinubu’s New Party Getting Support As Lagos Organises Rally

The projection that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu will break away from the All Progressives Congress is looking feasible as a grand rally in support of the chieftain was organised in Lagos.

Tinubu has received support after his position in the APC, a party he contributed to its emergence and success, was being relegated to the background.

It was reported that Tinubu was being left out of important decision making in the APC increasing speculation that he would leave the party.

Following the crises that engulfed the party in the Ondo gubernatorial primaries, Tinubu asked Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, the chairman of the party, to resign.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti even asked the APC not to betray Tinubu as anyone would do would regret it.

The Punch shared pictures of a rally organised in Lagos on Saturday, November 12 in support of Tinubu.

Wike Attacks Amaechi, Onu Over Bribery Scandal

– Governor Nyesom Wike has called for the head of public office holders whose hands have been soiled with corruption

– Wike says the ongoing anti-corruption war spearheaded by President Buhari, has no regard for the rule of law

– The Rivers state governor says everyone who flouts the law must be held responsible including those in Buhari’s cabinet

Governor, Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, on Thursday, November 11, called for the suspension, resignation or termination of appointments of public office holders who have scores to settle with the law.

Governor Wike says public office holders whose names have been smeared in corruption cases must step aside, till their innocence is proven.
Wike said those officers whose innocence are still doubt must step aside till they have been proven worthy of the offices they occupy.

Daily Post reports that the governor made the assertion, as he accused the Federal Government of being bias in its ongoing anti-graft war.

Speaking at the 2016 annual conference of the chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Nigerian Branch, in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Wike wondered why the government forced some public officers accused of corruption to step aside pending the conclusion of their cases while others similarly accused of corruption were allowed to continue with their jobs.

Wike also alleged that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-graft war has no regard for the rule of law.

He said: “We think the Federal Government must hold every public officer and everyone of us to the same standards of accountability.

“It smacks of double standard for the Federal Government to force some public officers accused of corruption to step aside pending the conclusion of their cases, while keeping other public officers similarly accused in their public posts simply because they happen to be top members of the ruling party.

Such inequities strike at the very essence of our moral values and rubbish the demand for character and personal integrity in public service.

“By resigning from his public position on account of the allegations of bribery against him, Muiz Banire (SAN), a former legal adviser of the All Progressives Congress, has proven to be a man who loves his character more than anything else.

“Let all those public officers with the smear of corruption step aside honourably and concentrate on clearing their names. We totally support our President’s fight against corruption.

However, we are on our way to anarchy if we encourage or allow law enforcement agencies the latitude to abuse the fundamental rights of our citizens under the guise of fighting corruption.”

This is coming at a time when a cross section of Nigerians are calling for the sack of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and his counterpart from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ogbonnaya Onu over bribery allegation levelled against them by two Supreme Court justices, Sylvester Ngwuta as well as John Inyang Okoro.

Meanwhile, Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, has accused the Police High Command of plotting to sweep the alleged printing of fake result sheets by the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the carpet with the takeover of the matter by the Police Zone 6, Calabar.

Giving an update at the Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday on the alleged printing of fake election result sheets by Rivers APC and INEC, Wike said the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 6 has asked the Rivers State Police Command to transfer the case and suspects to Calabar.

He said: “The interest of the police is to ensure that all those indicted in this plot to rig the rerun elections are not prosecuted. “INEC must realise that this has to do with its credibility .

It is not enough to simply deny. They must take steps to ensure that they clear themselves.

“The question of how the printers got the serial numbers and the code numbers of the units used for the results sheets and sensitive materials must be answered by INEC.

“During the rerun tribunal sitting, the Rivers APC tendered results that were different from those declared by INEC after the March 19 elections.

But the Court of Appeal and the tribunal were not deceived by the antics of the Rivers APC and INEC. These were the same people who said no election took place, but they had separate result sheets which they tendered in court.”

Facebook Declares Mark Zuckerberg, Others Dead

There was pandemonium on Friday, November 11, after Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg and 2 million others were declared dead by the social media network due to an unusual error.

Facebook has apologised for the mistake that declared about two million people dead.
The error caused the social network to show a memorial banner on user profiles for people who were still alive.

The message, intended for “memorialised profiles”, erroneously appeared on the profile pages of a large number of users, giving the impression that they are dead

Facebook has however apologised for the mistake, describing it as a “terrible error that has now been fixed.

“For a brief period, a message meant for memorialised profiles was mistakenly posted to other accounts,” a Facebook spokesperson said. “This was a terrible error that we have now fixed.”

The mistaken memorial notices, according the Indian Express, contained links to forms that can be submitted to have people’s accounts at the leading social network modified into online memorials after they die.

Media reports have indicated that close to two million errant memorials were posted on profile pages, causing confusion, tears and shock, but problem seems to have been resolved by now.

Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg has denied that his social network helped Donald Trump win the US election.

In an interview at the Techonomy conference in California, Zuckerberg said fake news on Facebook could not have influenced the outcome of the presidential election.

He said if the idea of fake news on is on Facebook – it’s a very small amount of the content, noting that to think it influenced the election in any way is a pretty crazy idea

He added that if fake news were shared, it was likely that both candidates adopted this strategy.

Edo: Obaseki Takes Oath Of Office Amid Tight Security

Feelers from Edo state have it that there is tension in the state as the governor-elect, Godwin Obaseki takes his oath of office.

Outgoing governor, Adams Oshiomhole is expected to hand over formally to the new governor of the state at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium where the oath of office will be taken officially.

But there are reports that there is tight security right from the adjoining roads to the stadium and those leading directly into the stadium as the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) confirmed that police officers, soldiers, SSS officers, NSDC, among other forces were stationed at strategic positions within and outside the stadium.

Trump Embarrasses Soyinka, TB Joshua

The social media space was set ablaze Wednesday after it became clear that Donald Trump, the hitherto Republican presidential candidate, had won the keenly contested American presidential election against popular favourite, Hillary Clinton of the Democratic party.
With his win, Trump stands to become the 45th US president. But that is not the story of the day for Nigerians.
The main issues for Nigerians at this point are two popular persons — Prof. Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate and Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua, popularly known as TB Joshua, founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN).
While Soyinka had threatened to destroy his green card (a US residency permit) if Trump won, Joshua on the other hand had predicted that Clinton would win the election.
Was that to be? Apparently no, as the results have declared Trump winner, thus making a mess of the prophetic declaration of Joshua, which many Nigerians banked on to place bets with their friends and families.
In a move many have described as firing blank shots, Joshua had on a video uploaded on his official Facebook account ‘prophesied’ that he saw a woman win the election.
Although he did not mention her (Clinton) name, he said: “Ten days ago, I saw the new president of America with a narrow win. The new president will be facing several challenges over many issues, including: passing bills, attempts to possibly pass a vote of no confidence on the new president.
“The boat of the new president will be rocked. By the way, in order not to keep you in suspense, what I frankly saw is a woman.”
But the person taking the most flak on social media was Prophet Joshua, as most Nigerians called him out on his prophesy, while some went as far as calling him Pinocchio (a boy whose nose grows long each time he lies).
Immediately the results were announced, many people of course remembered the prophesy and went back to that post, only to find it gone. It had been deleted.
However, the deletion did not prove a deterrent for Nigerians who took to different social media platforms to mock the duo.
Surprisingly, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the forthcoming Ondo State governorship election, Jimoh Ibrahim, also went in for the kill while tweeting on his Twitter handle
@JimohIbrahimOFR .
He teased: “Even though TB Joshua has seen it that I am the next Governor of Ondo State, please let him keep it to himself for now.”
A former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Reno Omokri, joined the fray when he wrote: “Dear TB Joshua, who gave you your prophecy? My God that I serve is not a man that he will lie.”
One Adedayo Ayomide said: “People: TB Joshua you said a woman will win. TB Joshua: you people didn’t hear me clearly, I said woolman, the person his head looks like wool.”
Mistur Sam wrote: “TB Joshua is only good at predicting football matches not US election. Is he really a prophet or bet9ja expert?”
An ardent believer of the prophet, one Arther Chatora, wrote: “Even when Clinton was stuck at 2015 electoral votes for hours, and Trump was close to 270, I still believed TB Joshua’s prophecy.”
A Twitter user simply identified as @CorrectBea wrote: “Please has Soyinka torn his green card? Do we still believe TB Joshua and his prophecies? Please pray and think twice before making any statement.”
For Soyinka, who is a scholar-in-residence at New York University’s Institute of African American Affairs, he was quoted to have declared, while giving a speech to Oxford University students, that he would not wait to be told to reapply for a green card.
He reportedly said: “If in the unlikely event he does win, the first thing he will do is to say all green-card holders must reapply to come back into the US. Well, I am not waiting for that. The moment they announce his victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up.”
To him Omokri also wrote: “Dear Professor Wole Soyinka, please think twice before you tear your green card. You may find recession back home hard to deal with!”

Buhari’s Meeting With N-Delta Leaders

THE consensus among the leaders of Niger Delta that attended the three-hour close-door meeting, Tuesday, November 1, with President Muhammadu Buhari, at Aso Villa, Abuja is that the parley was a good start and has broken the seeming barrier between the president and the region. But whether the President is sincere enough and ready to tackle the issues headlong, opinions are still ambiguous.
However, spokesperson of Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, the most dangerous militant group in the region, self-styled Brigadier General Mudoch Agbinibo, in an exclusive interview with Saturday Vanguard, gave the leaders a pass mark, indicating that they have at least presented the demands of the people to Buhari and it was now left for him (President) to take the preliminary discussion to the next level.
On the contrary, Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, NDGJM, a militant group in Delta state and Urhobo Common Cause, UCC, think the Niger Delta leaders, who were in Abuja, simply went to gallivant.

Some Niger Delta groups, among them, the Ijaw Peoples Development Initiative, Foundation for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade, FHRACC, Ijaw Human Rights Monitor, Niger-Delta Security Watch Organization of Nigeria, NDSWON, on the other hand, commended the leaders for their representation, but mouthed some reservations.
The man, who led the Niger Delta leaders to Abuja, former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Clark, disagreed that the meeting was not an achievement, a position that the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, who facilitated the assembly, re-echoed in an interview with Saturday Vanguard.

What transpired?
A Niger Delta leader, who was at the meeting, told Saturday Vanguard: “We, (the leaders) got to the venue quite early before 11.00 am and the ministers and other top officials of the president came in. The meeting started I think with the media man to the president saying some things after the president came in.”
“The governors from the region, who were there spoke. Governor Ifeanyi Okowa from Delta state and Owelle Rochas Okorocha of Imo state were there. I also saw Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa-Ibom state. I cannot say precisely if Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state was there, but I know that I did not see Comrade Adams Oshiomhole of Edo state,” he said.
His words: “Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi was not there, but Okowa, Okorocha spoke. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and his Niger Delta counterpart also spoke.”
“Chief Clark in his usual manner made some comments on why the Niger Delta leaders came and introduced the co-chairman of the Central Working Committee, CWC, of Pan Niger Delta Forum PANDEF, traditional ruler of Twon Brass, His Majesty King Alfred Diete-Spiff to read out the position paper of the leaders.
“In his introductory remarks, Clark told the president that we are here for peace, that Nigeria belongs to all of us and we are not against Buhari’s leadership, but there are issues he has to look into. I think the former governor of Akwa Ibom state, Obong Attah, a co-chairman of PANDEF, spoke before Diete-Spiff read our 16- point demand.
“It was after the demands were read that the president now spoke. But there was a little drama, as Clark told Diete-Spiff that the address should be personally presented to the president, and as they were trying to do that, somebody wanted to take the paper from him, but the matter was resolved.”
According to the source: “The Minister of Niger Delta, who wore a Hausa cap came to speak and all what he was saying was that we (Niger Delta) is not together. I cannot imagine him saying that we are not together so blatantly, knowing all the efforts we made to come together under PANDEF. It was a painful gospel that the leaders were not in-charge.”
He asserted: “President Buhari stated that he had set up a security committee and has received first and second reports and was waiting for the third one that will tell him, who are the militants, their leaders and where they are operating from. He stated that he was ready to tackle them.”
“The president made it clear that he was not going to read from his prepared speech and apparently because of what the Minister of Niger Delta said earlier, he unequivocally stated that the leaders have to do more than they have done, saying nothing can be done without peace in the region and the leaders have to guarantee peace before anything can happen.
“He said bluntly that the militants can leave the country if they want to leave. It could be taken as an honest statement from the president, but the way he said it with arrogance made me wonder,” the Niger –Delta leader added.
In his opinion: “Our main proposal was for him to set up a team to dialogue with the region, he did not say anything on that when he spoke. Rather, what I could make out of his statement is that if we (leaders) do not get the boys to stop, then, there is not likely to be further action on the region.”
He added: “I will, however, say that we have opened up to the President. I think that not just the Niger Delta region, but the international community and all those interested in finding peace in the region know that we have bared our mind and the ball is now in the court of the president.”
Asked his impression of the meeting, he said: “Overall, I do not think his response was encouraging. It appeared to me that he has made up his mind about issues in the region on the basis of what his aides have been briefing him. But I also think that it is the beginning of new challenges for him in the Niger Delta. It was not all together a fruitless meeting and I dare say that no president can afford to neglect peace in the Niger Delta, especially when our dependence is on oil and believe that he can succeed.”
“In all, But for the intervention of God, I foresee danger for the people of Niger Delta,” he asserted.

Buhari not egotistical — Clark
PANDEF leader, Chief Clark, disagreed that the president was arrogant in the manner he spoke. As far as he was concerned, the president was blunt and spoke his mind.
He said the leaders had earlier at a meeting in Abuja considered the report of PANDEF’s CWC from where an outline was approved and the 16-point demand later developed.”
EDWIN CLARK
Clark confirmed that he made introductory remarks before Diete-Spiff and others spoke, saying: “I am impressed with what the president said and I believed that something will come out of government. He (Buhari) was quite relaxed. He did not read his prepared speech, he was straightforward. He touched some of the points we made and I think government made a good gesture on the take-off of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko.”
“It was enough gesture from the government, it has shown that it is ready to take up some of the issues, but on our part, we should maintain the peace. I appeal to all the youths to sheathe their swords and give the leaders a chance to discuss with the government,” he said.
Continuing, Clark asserted: “I was quite happy when I saw him relaxed; he took photographs with the monarchs, leaders and even the youths after the meeting. If he was not happy with us, you would have seen it. He was patient with us.”
He said it was not true that the president was derisive of the leaders and the region at the meeting, adding: “I can say that the suspicion that the president is against the region was cleared at the meeting, there was nothing like talking down on the leaders.”
On his reaction to an alleged indictment of the leaders by the Minister of Niger Delta, he said: “I am unaware of that. He was asked to move a vote of thanks. I did not listen much to what he said and you know when the president had spoken, there is nothing any other person is supposed to say thereafter. What I know is that he moved a vote of thanks.”
He surmised: “The meeting was a friendly start and those, who thought the president and Niger Delta leaders do not see eye to eye would be surprised. I can tell you that the mistrust and hedge have been broken.”

Avenue for talks now open — Ikponwen
Former Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Idada Ikponwen (retd.), who attended the meeting also told Saturday Vanguard: “After all these months of trying to persuade the president to hold a meeting with Niger Delta leaders, who have received the mandate of the militants , I want to say that the meeting was a good start.”
“It afforded the region the opportunity to present its 16-point demand to the government, not necessarily in order of priority. The president addressed us and expressed his strong feeling that achievement of peace was a prerequisite for moving forward and that the leaders should be after peace for normal planning of government to go on.
“He also said that he did not believe as observed by the Minister of Niger Delta that we were not working together, against the background that the boys were still bombing. But my take is that an avenue for dialogue has been opened even though no dialogue team was set up as we requested,” Ikponwen said.
His words: “The president can no longer say that he has nobody to talk to in the region, the leaders are there for him to talk contrary to his earlier statement that there was nobody to talk to in the region.”

Kudos for N-Delta elders — AVENGERS
Niger Delta Avengers spokesperson, Agbinibo, in an interview with Saturday Vanguard, said: “The Niger Delta Elders and leaders under the leadership of Papa (Dr) Senator Edwin Kiagbodo Clark Pan Niger Delta Elders and stakeholders Forum deserve kudos by well- meaning Nigerians by presenting such minimal demands before the government of Nigeria to pacify the people and region that have being continuously raped and dehumanized over six decades because the golden egg she lays is commonwealth of the nation.”
“These demands will lead to the road-map to the desired peaceful atmosphere that Nigerian state so need if there is sincerity. The days of free peace to extract our resources are gone for good. Since the day crude oil and gas resources were discovered for the past 60 years, we are only asking for potable water, electricity, affordable healthcare, quality education etc. Until 1994, our people were visited by state sponsored military invasion by the regime of General Sani Abacha that, President Muhammadu Buhari served as one of his henchmen and chaired the Petroleum Trust Fund.
“Our elders, traditional rulers and stakeholders have spoken. They have placed the minimal legitimate demands of the Niger Delta region before the Nigerian government. The prospects of regaining the trust of the people by talking down on the people or using the instruments of force by the state are gone. This is the 21st century Niger Delta; we gave the Nigerian state and her International Oil Corporations freedom, peaceful atmosphere for overtime, but were betrayed.
“We are not deterred by President Muhammadu Buhari mulling over continuous military operation and the so-called funny and odd doctrines like military choke points, Operations Delta Safe, etc,” it added.
NDA stated: “This nation has being feeding and sustaining itself from the resources of the Niger Delta since 1976. The President has a date with history now. Since 1994 when his colleagues advised their boss, General Sani Abacha to draft the military into Ogoni land, it has not been the same again.”
“Despite the state orchestrated and sponsored killing fields, Ogoni-Nine (Kenule Saro Wiwa) to Kaiama, Odi, Okerenkoko etc, all to sustain the free flow of crude oil from our fatherland, nothing can stop our resolve to achieve our legitimate struggle. We are only waxing stronger, more determined and mastering the battlefields.
“It is high time president Muhammadu Buhari employed capable brains and characters who would manage his government positively before it degenerates to a psychopathic regime. At his age, he can decide to stop listening to those who bankrolled his journey to power… Any leader that is ready to govern his people must have political education else. You can treat the Niger Delta with disdain, when you treat terrorists and mere kidnappers by committing the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement from Geneva to witness your transactions with them.
“Our fathers and elders have done the needful, we are not disappointed. The issues they raised bring to the fore the mistakes of the Nigerian federalism that gave rise to the perennial struggle of our fathers. The demands are minimal and a legitimate road-map to setting up the framework to achieving the short, medium and long objective to the restoration of tranquility in the region.
“Some are issues that need affirmative action; the immediate take off of academic activities for the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU) Okerenkoko for the 2016/17 academic session, withdrawing all occupational security agencies and agents in Ijaw land. The Nigerian state genuinely need the cooperation of our people to sustain the flow of the abundant crude oil and gas resources in our land that they have being extracting without regard to the people and the environment,” the group said.

Rift among militants
On the obvious differences among the militant groups, especially the continued bombings by Niger –Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, NDA spokesperson said: “There is no problem among groups in the agitation; we may have challenges of speaking in one voice. When the trumpet blows, we will go the biblical way of “separating the Shears from the Tares” (Matthew 13:24-30).”

Sympathy
“The path to peace and conflict resolution is always not a straight jackpot. There will come a time you too can do the thinking for difficult opponents when the opportunity arises. There are many ways to skin a cat.
“The man, President Muhammadu Buhari needs our sympathy at present. From the trauma of Boko Haram and herdsmen, his so-called brother and children that he is handling with kids gloves to the deliberate state -orchestrated killings in Biafra land.

Praises for Kachikwu
Gbaramatu-Ijaw leader, Chief Godspower Gbenekem, who was at the Abuja meeting with Buhari, said: “My take on the meeting with the President and his body language is that first: there is the need for the federal government to ensure that the pronouncements made by the government through the Minister of Petroleum as concerning the Maritime University Okerenkoko and the EPZ projects are implemented to the letter.”
“That the Minister of Petroleum is worthy of commendation because since the problem started, he has shown determination in solving the problem in his own little way in the face of other hostile minister in the same government. It was also clear that the minister actually worked to bring the President to the table to receive the Niger Delta leaders as shown by the president’s speech,” he said.

President’s body language discouraging
He asserted: “The body language of the President was still not too encouraging. For him to still be expecting to hear from service chiefs the number of militant groups, their leaders and area of influence shows that he still has some hidden plans. He should reciprocate the gesture of the Niger Delta leaders.”
“One cannot understand why the President could not even make any statement concerning setting up an inter-ministerial committee to discuss with the Niger Delta people as demanded by the leaders of Niger Delta.

… Slams N-Delta minister
“All those ministers, who are representing the Niger Delta in the present dispensation should sit up. The address by the Minister of Niger Delta was not palatable. It shows the problems of the Niger Delta are in the hands of some sons and daughters of the Niger Delta,” he said.
Gbenekema added: “Lastly, the President should see the Niger Delta people as his subjects and not his enemies. This would give hope to the people of the Niger Delta to keep faith in his government. He should deliberately demilitarize the zone as a show of respect for the elders so that we do not discuss under a tense environment. I want to thank the Niger Delta leaders for a fearless presentation.”

Ball in Buhari’s court
“We should not expect everybody to agree with our style but let us be focused, we would get there. And to our brothers, who are agitated about the attitude of the present government, let us still give peace a chance. If the federal government fails to set up their team, let it be obvious that it is the government that is not ready for peace. Please let us keep the peace. I strongly believe this government cannot afford to avoid the peace move of the Niger Delta people,” he said.

Why bombing won’t stop— Ultimate Warriors
Another militant group, Ultimate Warriors of Niger Delta, UWND, Sibiri Taiowoh: “Ultimate Warriors of Niger Delta, UWND, first reaction on the outcome of the PANDEF meeting with President Buhari is that the Niger Delta question is a policy issue that does not even need leaders of the region visiting Mr. President like they have just done, which to us is like going cap in hand to beg before critical decisions about the region can be added into the budget.”
Taiwoh asserted: “This is one of the reasons we had opposed this option right from beginning and have canvassed for the federal government naming a team that would re-negotiate with leaders of the region, while the federal government leverages on the ceasefire to come out and implement its blueprint for us.”
It added: “OMPADEC, NDDC, Ministry of Niger Delta and the Amnesty Programme were all off springs’ of agitations and insurgency. The Nigeria government has not on its own volition, and as a matter of national security and interest of the Niger Delta marshaled out executable plans for the region. What has the FG really given to us on its own, Nothing?”

Disenchanted with govt
“We had expected the federal government to make a policy statement on November 1, but what we got was noncommittal and some sarcasm on the part of the government. What a shame!
“UWND is seriously dissatisfied with the federal government position and it will only bring us back to the trenches in the days ahead.
“How can Mr. President pronounce ‘no quick fix’ on issues that have been on the front burner for months? It only portrays how unserious and non-committed the government is. It shows this government is not prepared right from onset to do anything right for us. Their interest is to keep the crude oil running to the detriment of our people. And it only exposes the federal government’s nonchalance to the problem of this country because all the issues tabled before President Buhari are not new to him.

What Buhari should have done?
“We expected Mr. President to have unveiled a holistic blueprint of what government intends doing for the region and make a specific commitment on some of the issues raised, but the government said they have to study the document presented to them first. Does that mean the government had nothing to offer us before now?
“We want to know, when was the demand for the infrastructural development of the FCT made, when did northern leaders lead their own delegation to Mr. President before the North East Development/Reconstruction Commission was set up? Why is the case of the Niger Delta region always different? Must we go cap in hand begging all the time before what we duly deserve is given to us?
“UWND make bold to say that President Muhammadu Buhari cannot feign ignorance of what the remote causes of the crisis in the Delta are. We have so many reports on the region archived in the Villa, so the excuse of studying the documents presented to them before they can make a presidential response shows they were never prepared for this dialogue.
Despite the federal government’s bellicose nature when it comes to issues of the Niger Delta, we want to reaffirm our support for the dialogue process so far it does not bring us back to square zero.
To this end, we have decided to nominate Chimennma Okolo, a lawyer, youth activist and environmental rights campaigner to liaise between us and the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, led by Chief E.K Clark, who we mandated to dialogue with the federal government and bring good news to the region.

Our demands
Okolo, is by no mean a member of UWND, but we have mandated him to articulate our position. The issues are: the issues of resource ownership/control, reallocation of 65 percent oil bloc, pipeline surveillance to the communities, a stop to gas flaring, payment of gas flare penalty funds, de-militarize the region and let the Niger Delta be a construction site.

Meeting was a failure – Ann- Kio Briggs
Niger Delta activist, Ann-Kio Briggs, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard, said: “The meeting was not successful as our people are not prepared to present the true picture of the feelings of the Niger Delta people. People, including myself, should not just get up and say things that would enslave us and our children.
“I am one of those, who believe that if anyone is discussing on behalf of the people of the Niger Delta and they are given something that does not augur well for us, such should be rejected and I believe that this is one of just times.
“We need restructuring, fiscal federalism and the people of the Niger Delta want to control the oil, but in the demands made, fiscal federalism is number 16.
“Also, the meeting has made it very clear that President Muhammadu Buhari is totally insensitive to the issues of the Niger Delta people. We would never get anywhere and we need to tell ourselves and the Federal Government the truth,” she said.

A charade – Urhobo group
The Urhobo Common Cause, UCC, Delta state, in a statement by its leader, Henry Tafri, said: “It was clear to all and sundry; those who participated and those who watched the meeting on network news, that it was a complete fiasco. Clearly, the attendees regretted going for the meeting.”

Triumph for Tompolo
“Secondly, some participants claim victory with respect to the Maritime University, many also doubt if this can be considered a victory in the true sense, knowing that this university may actually kick off in next two academic sessions, it is still at its conception stage. If any victory was gotten, it was technically that of Chief Government Ekpemepulo, the victory is situated in the fact that one of the reasons he was hounded into hiding by government is the issue of the land he sold to the government. With government’s acceptance to kick start the Maritime University, it means they have accepted all encumbrances attached to the land,” he added.

House divided
Tafri stated: “Let me begin by saying that those who have eyes let them see and those who have ear let them hear. The solution to crisis is embedded in the demands of the Niger-Delta Avengers (NDA) and strengthened by the Niger-Delta Greenland Justice Mandate (NDGJM) demands. It is just a simple statement that most persons gloss over, but its positive reactivation will bring the peace and the issue of negotiation can then take place in a serene atmosphere.”
“The saying that ‘a house divided against itself cannot stand’ best depicts the relationship between the leaders and elders of the Niger-Delta ethnic nationalities, an Ijaw man is uncomfortable in the presence of an Itsekiri man, this was manifest when the name of Chief Ayiri Emami was mentioned as representing the Itsekiri people with the Olu of Warri, it was ijaw people, who objected to his membership. Similarly, the Urhobo people are uncomfortable with sheer braggadocio of the average Ijaw man,” he said

No alternative to dialogue
Former member of the Delta State Hospitals Management Board, Dr. Michael Oberabor, said: “The severe drop in oil revenue, arising from renewed militancy in the Niger Delta region was the only reason that caused President Buhari to call for a meeting with the people of the region.”
“From the list of demands, it is obvious that the representatives at the meeting did not have the mandate of the militants. The only man with solid MEND credentials, Mr. Henry Okah is languishing in a South African jail. Tompolo is being hounded by the state. Respite for these two men should be at the top of the wish list. A close look at the demands will see the above necessity embedded within, but not very obvious.
“In the first place, Jonathan would not have been President if there were no violent agitation from the region. On the long run, President Buhari would have no option than to dialogue with the militants. If the Niger Delta leaders cannot pressure him to do that, the British and the Americans will do so.
As a direct consequence of the non-acceptance of the outcome of the meeting, the militants Wednesday bombed another pipeline,” Oberabor said.

Applause for PANDEF
For activist, Tony Uranta, “Even ostensibly cerebral minds seem to not even understand that a genesis does not translate immediately or automatically to a conclusion. Today, to an amazingly greater extent than ever before, the Niger Delta has achieved a non-partisan unity in PANDEF, equating the South East’s Ohaneze, the South West’s Afenifere and the North’s Arewa, but small minds never see the light until it is blinding.”
“Tuesday’s meeting with the President is akin to the cautious feinting and jabbing boxers tend to start a bout with….it was not a negotiation meeting, but merely one to create the atmosphere in which to commence serious negotiations in the no distant future.
We expected a federal dialogue team – Ifukor
Uche Ifukor of Academic Associates PeaceWorks, a nongovernmental organization, said:
“I would say that the meeting with Mr. President was very necessary as it provided the platform for the Niger Delta People to have meaningful engagement with him. It was the beginning and I see more engagements that would lead to the resolution of the Niger Delta question.“

Gazette agenda for N-Delta
National Coordinator, Niger Delta Vanguard for Good Governance, Ebi Brisibe, however, contended: “Chief E.K. Clark team should sincerely liaise with the federal government to implement and act out the recommendations of reports of various panels of judicial inquiries into the intractable problems, most especially the expedient Ledum Mitee-led report of the Federal Government Technical Committee on the Niger Delta, implementation of the 2014 National Conference Reports.”
“To clearly indicate its sincerity and honesty in the peace initiative between the Federal Government and the Niger Delta, the government of President Mohammadu Buhari should clearly define and gazette its agenda for the Niger Delta region.
“Such a sincerity of purpose on the part of the Government towards the peace building would produce the desired and willing responses of the people in the peace initiative.

Abuja smokescreen
Dickson Bekederemo, president of the Niger Delta Security Watch Organization of Nigeria, NDSWON, asserted: “Recently, Ohaneze ndigbo held a meeting and made a demand for restructuring of this defective federal structure. Unfortunately, the PANDEF did not take a clue from them. Prior to 1st of November, the clamour was restructuring. They told us they were not going to dialogue but to inform the president of their preparedness to dialogue and that they will not make demands, what informed the brutal change beats my imagination.”
“The whole list appears to have been prepared hurriedly. The emphasis could have been on the twin issue of oil governance and restructuring of this defective federal structure that favours one section of the country. The messengers did not appreciate the seriousness of the message they bear. Hence, the President also did not take them serious and as such there was no serious commitment from him, as it relates to their demands. The handshakes and the broad smiles were mere camouflage. They came out disappointed. The issues are still far from being resolved,” he said.

Poor presentation — IPDI
Similarly, national president of the Ijaw People Development Initiative, IPDI, Austin Ozobo, said: “To be honest, there is a lacuna in the just concluded PANDEF team meeting with president Buhari. Frankly the meeting fell below expectations. It appeared to be a political jamboree, a talk shop or show which really cannot provide any solution to Niger delta current challenges.”
“The presentations were made in panic and were face-saving.

Runaway Wife: Bride Jilts Groom At Wedding Reception

A 41-year-old man, simply identified as Julius, is finding it difficult to understand why his “wife” abandoned her marital vows midway into their wedding, shouting “I am no longer interested,” at the wedding reception in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State.
All pleas by the bewildered husband at the popular Orhunwhorhun Road for the woman to reconsider her decision were to no avail.
Her close friend told Vanguard that she saw her true love at the reception venue and decided to follow her heartthrob.
The incident took place on Saturday, October 29. The would-be bride, Roseline, 32, has since disappeared into thin air and all efforts to trace her whereabouts had yielded no result at press time.
It was a pandemonium as the wife ran out of the wedding reception and rejected her husband, saying “I am no longer interested,” forcing the wedding reception to end abruptly.
The dazed husband, guests and bridal train ran after Roseline, caught up with her at the popular Orhunwhorhun Road, where all pleas for her to reconsider her decision and return to the reception venue fell on deaf ears.
A close female confidante of the woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Vanguard: “I believe she did what she did because she saw the previous man in her life at the reception. We heard that he had earlier promised to marry the bride, but he later travelled to Lagos and never showed up again.
“When the bride waited for a long time and he (former suitor) was nowhere to be found, she decided to marry another man, who was ready although she still loved her former suitor.
“So when her true love showed up at the reception without notice, the woman saw him and decided to call it quits with her husband to follow her heartthrob.”

NDA ENLISTMENT: 4 Unfit Cadets Die In Kaduna

CONTROVERSIES are currently trailing a recruitment exercise being carried out by the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, over the death of four Cadets who were recently enlisted into the institution for intensive military training exercises.
The Cadets were said to have died after medical complications arising from the intensive rigorous exercises which exposed their unfitness a few weeks after their admission.
The death of the four Cadets which was said to have jolted the leadership of the institution, resulted in the authorities, instituting a panel to investigate the medical and physical condition of other Cadets undergoing military training in the institution.
At the end of the panel’s sitting, the investigators who included physical training experts, physiotherapists, psychologists and medical doctors, discovered that a sizeable number of the cadets were suffering from severe medical deficiency.
Further investigation by Saturday Vanguard revealed that the situation was so bad that over 50 Cadets were discovered to be suffering from life-threatening diseases.
Tongues have started wagging as to how this large number of medically unfit Cadets were enlisted.
However, Saturday Vanguard was told by sources close to the Academy that about 53 Cadets having been screened and found to be medically unfit had been listed to be expelled.
The NDA Board is expected to approve the recommendation by the Academy. It was learnt that the authorities may have taken the stand to have the medically sick Cadets expelled because of the fear of likely outrage from the public if more deaths were recorded. Observers are however miffed that a military institution like the NDA could allow itself to be bamboozled by politicians into bending its admission rules.
It was gathered that before a cadet could be enlisted into the NDA through the Regular Combatant Intake, Short Service Intake, and Short Service Combatant Intake, the successful cadet was expected to be at least 17 years old.
He must not be less than 1.68 meters tall for a male and 1.50 meters for a female.
He must be medically and physically fit and must be of good moral character.
Findings, however, revealed that these conditions were used during the recruitment of the Cadets given that most were foisted on the institution by prominent persons.
When Saturday Vanguard contacted the Public Relations Officer of the Academy, Major Yakassai for an update on the matter, he said he was attending a meeting and promised to call back.

LEADERS TO END MILITANCY.

At a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and other top government officials on Tuesday, representatives of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria presented 16 points they believe should be considered by the government and implemented to end militancy in the region and boost development.
The presidential amnesty Programme: the decry that out of the five components of the disarmament and retrieval of weapons from the ex-militants, only the disarmament and demobilisation component is being implemented. Tensions over the fate of the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme is as a result of lack of genuine exit strategy. They want the Programme reviewed to reappraise its core mandate to provide a robust exist strategy, in order to transit recipients into jobs, effectively integrate them and few the of dependency on stipends, so that their new-found skills would be of benefit to themselves and larger community.
Law and Justice issues: in view of the insecurity situation in the Niger delta, a number of pending law and justice issues regarding some aggrieved groups and individuals are yet to be resolved. It is important to address these issues urgently as a step towards lasting peace.
The effect of increased military presence in the Niger Delta: the increased in military presence has resulted in invasion of communities, displacement of persons, harassment and other firms of human rights abuse. They want government to halt the the escalation of tension in the region.
Plights of internally displaced persons: they want relevant government agencies to take urgent measures to meet their immediate needs of those displaced by upsurge of insecurity in the region.
The Ogoni clean-up and environmental remediation: they want government to speed up the exercise. They want government to enforce zero gas flare deadline. They want the devastating effects of coastal erosion and lack of an effective shoreline protection for the coastal communities tackled urgently. They ask federal government to commission a region-wide credible assessment of the impacts of crude oil pollution of the environment in the region and undertake to enforce environmental laws.
The Maritime University Issue: want prompt take off of the Niger Delta university
Key regional critical infrastructure: they want completion of of East-West road, full implementation of the rail project that is designated to run through the Niger Delta region to Lagos.
Security surveillance and protection of oil and gas infrastructure. They want pipeline surveillance contracts given to the communities rather than individuals in a manner that is some benefits to their responsibility. Communities would the see their responsibility over the pipelines as protection of what belongs to them.
Relocation of Administrative and Operational Headquarters of IOCs: the headquarters of most oil companies are not located in the Niger Delta Region. As a result the region is denies all the developmental and associated benefits that would have accrued to the region from their presence. It has therefore become imperative for the IOCs to relocate to their areas of operation. This move will create a mutually beneficial relationship with the host communities.
10: Power supply: they advocate a power plan that strongly ties power supply in the region to gas supplies, thereby giving all sides a stake in proved stability.
Economic development and empowerment: they want Brass LNG and fertiliser plant project including the Train 7 implemented, reviewing and updating the national gas master plan to integrate the economic interests and industrialization of the region, creating a Niger Delta industrial corridor that would process some portions of the bat hydrocarbon natural resources, expediting work on the export processing zones, harnessing the huge rain-fed agricultural potentials of the area through the development of farms estates, fishery development projects and Agro-Allied industrial clusters etc.
Inclusive participation in oil industry and ownership of oil blocs. They want the federal government to enunciate policies and actions that will address the lack of participation as well as imbalance in the ownership of oil and gas assets.
Restructuring and funding of the NDDC: The restructuring will ensure it refocuses as a true interventionist agency to respond swiftly to the yearnings of the grassroots of the Niger Delta. Communities must be able to have a say in what projects come to them and also want full implementation of the funding provisions of the NDDC Act.
Strengthening the Niger Delta Ministry: they say the era of abysmal funding should end. The ministry should be adequately funded and strengthen to fulfill the purpose for which it was created.
The Bakassi Question, recommend a comprehensive resettlement plan including development for the host communities and displaced population to reduce the risk of making the into a stateless people.
Fiscal federalism, the region supports the call for true federalism and urged that federal government should treat the matter expeditiously.
